OLDEST SCHOOL

This has been around me as long as I can remember.

My first recordings were done on a Teac 4-track reel-to-reel machine that was very difficult to use while trying to record by myself. Nevertheless, I pulled it off and was pleased with the results. Nowadays, multi-track recording has become almost free, if you have access to a reasonably powerful computer, but I still prefer to do all my recording on a stand-alone machine that has none of the problems of a computer. Set up your mic, arm a track to record, and push the big red button. No software to mess with, no pop-ups or crashes to ruin the mood.

FROM SOIL TO STARS

Borne in the star-light
Time for your soul
to be called once again

Transtellar sorceries
carry solar wind
to be sighed
for all time

Spawn cold new worlds
Distant hearts laid to seed
Sown far from home

YOU NEVER QUITE GET THERE

My Vocal Recording Space
Coming to the end of the process of STAR-THROWN. All instruments have been recorded and rough-mixed. Unfortunately, every time I'm almost there, I decide to change something up. This time, thanks to the input of a close friend, I've decided to re-do many of the drum sequences to be less busy. At first, I thought that bombastic drums would increase the tension, but I've found that simplifying the drum parts has greatly improved the massiveness of the whole project. Almost there.

KEEP IT IN THE UNDERGROUND

I don't care that my recordings don't sound huge and professional-studio-worthy. I grew up listening to underground metal demos, and copies of copies of tapes. That stuff sounds good to my ears. Most of my favorite albums, were home recordings done by the artists themselves or very low budget recordings. Usually, they sound very honest and organic. It seems, to me at least, that the best emotions and mood are captured this way. So, I suppose that's why I can't stand the sound of many new albums, especially if recorded at a real studio. Everything is clinically scoured of every last bit of dynamics and emotion in the quest for the most error-free recording.

CAPTURING THE OTHERWORLD

Magick from nature:
Phosphorescent stones, snail shell, hawk feather, and Redwood leaf
I've always felt that recording was the place to experiment. Why capture reality perfectly? It's very interesting to me, to create a sound or atmosphere that doesn't exist in the real world. To create a soundscape that takes someone elsewhere. Sure, that may contradict what I previously said about major studios making a perfect recording. But, I think there is big difference between a perfect-sounding recording with triggered drums, utterly compressed guitars, etc, and creating a new type of soundscape. I think many new black metal artists are able to do this wonderfully in their home studios, since nothing is holding them back from exploring new atmospheres. The fact that they are recording all the instruments at different times automatically creates a very alien sound.
