My first recordings were done on a Teac 4-track reel-to-reel machine that was very difficult to use while trying to record by myself. Nevertheless, I pulled it off and was pleased with the results. Nowadays, multi-track recording has become almost free, if you have access to a reasonably powerful computer, but I still prefer to do all my recording on a stand-alone machine that has none of the problems of a computer. Set up your mic, arm a track to record, and push the big red button. No software to mess with, no pop-ups or crashes to ruin the mood.
